In the first edition, participants submitted essays outlining how space could meet one of the twenty (20) goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Agenda 2063 is the continental framework for Africa’s socioeconomic development and integration. The aspirations, goals and priority areas are available here.
Authors of top essays received full scholarship to participate in the African Space Policy and Strategy (ASP) course, at ASLI.
The best three essays were by:
- Isah Daniel Ugbede (Nigeria)
- Joseph Kathukya (Kenya)
- Asmamaw Esayas (Ethiopia)
They received additional full scholarship to participate in the 2023 African Space Generation Workshop (AF-SGW), in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The second edition required participants to submit an essay outlining how space can be used to meet one of the priority areas of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The prioirity areas, called High 5s were: Feed Africa, Light Up Africa, Industralise Africa, Integrate Africa and Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa. The aspirations, goals and priority areas are available here.

In the fourth edition, participants submitted essays on the theme: “Leveraging Space Science and Technology for Water Security and Safe Sanitation in Africa.” The theme of the competition is in line with the AU theme for 2026: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” Details here.
